I believe ALL kids need 5 things to be able to succeed in school. ALL kids need SUPPORT, STRUCTURE, SECURITY, CONSISTENCY, and COMPASSION. Without one of these things, the child will struggle in some aspect of their learning. They are the building blocks of Middle School Matters to help all kids
Children Thrive on SUPPORT – In school, support can mean remediation of content or content that challenges them. All students need scaffolds to reach their greatest potential. A student may even need emotional support from a mentor, parent, or trusted adult before they can get support academically.
Children Thrive on STRUCTURE – At school, students want to know
WHAT they are learning,
WHO are they learning with (whole class, small groups, or individual), WHEN they are learning (they like to know the start and stop times),
WHERE are they learning (are they moving seats or staying where they are),
WHY are they learning this (that one is obvious!),
and HOW are they learning it (what is the assignment).
If the students do not know these things, I’ll be honest, they panic a little. I get lots of questions from anxious students wanting to know what is going on. If the schedule is different, such as we have an early release or two-hour delay, they want to know what the schedule is right away. ALL students want to know what they are supposed to do.
Your child should have these things at home, as well. They are not too old for a routine at home! It could be as simple as a time frame for when they do homework and a time when they go to bed.
Children Thrive on SECURITY – Kids
Children Thrive on CONSISTENCY – Kids succeed when they are held to high standards. Just like structure, our expectations for them should be consistent. The students will learn what is expected of them academically and behaviorally.
Children Thrive on COMPASSION – Kids succeed when they know we care! This one is a no brainer! 🙂
